'What We Do Is Secret' at The Nuart 8/22

What We Do Is SecretFor anyone who missed Rodger Grossman's Germs biopic What We Do Is Secret at last year's L.A. Film Festival, or this year's NoisePop in San Francisco, the film is making its non-festival L.A. debut at The Nuart this month on Friday, August 22nd (also at Regal Irvine Six in the O.C.). Sparking both controversy and high praise, the movie was influential in rousing the remaining members of pivotal L.A. punk band The Germs back into the limelight, to delight old and new fans alike with shows across the country, featuring actor Shane West as frontman. The Germs Return line-up plays Saturday the 23rd at The Echo, as well as several dates of this year's Warped Tour, and having caught them several times before, LAist (and myself) deem both movie and live show not-to-be-missed.

I was at a beer-tasting benefit last weekend, and a super-folksy cover band with an earnest hippie girl singing was on when her "guy with a guitar" accompaniment whined into the mic, "Somebody get me a beeeyaaaaah". I was like, "Oh my God, did he really just make a Darby reference?" So it is seeping into the general culture. See this movie or get left behind.

By the way, dig the creative layout.

This movie is just awful. That said, it doesn't stink half as much as that travesty of a Germs nostalgia band currently making the rounds. The whole thing - and all the punk rock nostalgia in general, just totally mocks the spirit of punk (a movement that happened in the seventies!) Time to move on.

Ha! Well, folk IS pretty punk rock. ;)

Adolph, sorry you hated the movie.

I saw the movie. It just opened in New York and will play in Chicago and Pittsburgh 8/15. Anyone who appreciate music will enjoy this film.

Loved the film! I thought it was amazing finally being able to see something on one of my dad's relatively obscure favorites... And Hollywood West was pretty awesome as Crash - those teeth!!!

The Germs LIVE!!!

I just bought a ticket for me and my boyfriend for the movie at the Nuart and they gave me a free ticket to the show at the Echo... of course now I have to buy my boyfriend a ticket to the show. That's how they get you! lol.
