LA to SF High Speed Rail Prop Still Full Speed Ahead

hsrsb298.jpgIt's funny, everyone wants to stop the people from getting a chance to choose for themselves this November on the ballot. Yesterday, it was the LA County Board of Supervisors who denied putting a measure on the ballot that would let residents choose if they wanted an increased sales tax to provide massive funding for mostly public transit. Also this week, there was a Senate Bill that sought to take Prop 1, the high speed rail bond, off the ballot. It got voted down in a state transportation committee. So for now, in November, it's up to the voters to authorize a $9 billion bond to help travelers whisk from LA to San Francisco in less than three hours by the earliest projected date of 2018.

I don't understand how this could be bad for the state in any way, shape or form? Has anyone taken a look at how expensive airfares have become between SoCal and NorCal latley? I really hope this measure passes and we can all ride on a comfortable, low emissions train between cities within the next ten years! Plus, trains are just more fun than planes!

Finally voters will get a chance at this. It was shot down before making it to the ballot for what like 3 years now. We need high speed rail for such a high traffic corridor. I think train travel really needs to rebrand it self and highlight what makes it such a great way to travel. Dining cars with real meals, walking room, viewing cars, relaxed seating with luxurious leg room, all this with cheaper fares, and private rooms for those who can afford a little extra. The only thing that's not to love is our antiquated trains take too long to reach their destination by todays busy standards.

I've often imagined what it would be like if there were a train to Vegas, you could even have a full gambling car that opened as soon as you crossed the border, not to mention a full bar. Forget interstate highways and planes, train travel is where it's at.

OH man - the party train to Vegas. I love that idea.

I'm not sure you can call something that will take at least decade to provide even basic services "full speed ahead." More like "lazily petering down the track."

(Does anyone believe 2018? I don't and it's 2025 before it really kicks in)

We should be insulted by this proposal, not inspired by it. I'm almost considering voting against it just because it's ridiculous to think that they can't come up with a funding system and plan that could get a rail connection between LA and SF completed in less time than it takes for a baby to reach high school age.

Seriously, it only took 7 years to complete the flipping transcontinental railroad, and that was using all of the hyperadvanced technology available to people in the 1860s.

anyway, I sound like a granpa simpson so let me just add that what I want is better Public transit and high speed rail sooner.

But I do want to say that garySe7en wins the prize for best nickname.
