Yesterday evening at sunset, the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived to Ocean Front Walk at Venice Blvd. on a bird rescuing mission. A caller from her fourth story patio saw a seagull (gannet? heron?) dangling in a palm tree across the walk and called Animal Services, who in turn called for the help of a fire truck ladder. Here's what happened...

I have mixed feelings about this. I really won't want to see a bird harmed. Then again these blighters do take regular dumps on my black car. What is that green stuff anyway and the white stuff too.
Finally, I don't think this is a seagull. The beak looks wrong.
Awesome post. But I'm pretty sure that's not a gull. The legs and head and beak look way too long/big and in the image where the bird's feet are shown, I don't see any webbing. Looks more like a juvenile heron.
VERY cool!
Great pics.
It was humans that caused this poor bird to suffer so humans must rescue the suffering bird.
thanks for the bird comments guys. If anyone finds out what kind of bird it is, leave it here and I'll correct.
I think it's a Gannet. A baby at that.
sorry folks but this is a waste of resources
The same could be said about your comment tp
no way a waste...yay for the lafd/animal control
Nice pics!
it confuses me to no end that people will become emotionally involved and rally behind a team of government workers dedicating time and resources to rescuing an injured bird, then they all go home and eat chicken, turkey or duck for dinner.
This video was from about a month or so ago...

I took this video at Venice Beach near Windward Ave. when the LAFD rescued a seagull caught in a kite in a palm tree. People cared... hundreds of people stood watching. And if they did not get that bird out of the tree... they would have never stopped getting calls. I just wish he was able to hold on to the bird once he got him loose.......
