Rounding Up the State Props

As it stands right now, in November, we vote on 12 state propositions, which is quite a handful for our minds to wrap around. But it's nothing compared to the 47 state props Californians had to deal with back in the 1914 general election (should boxing be outlawed on Memorial Day?). The Santa Barbara Independent has nicely collated and summarized each prop under their proper categories:

• Four general obligation bond measures need a two-thirds vote for approval (high speed trains, hospitals, green energy and veteran homes)
• Three "culture clashes" (gay marriage, abortions and farm animal treatment)
• Three justice related proposals (treatment/rehabilitation for criminals, punishment for criminals and victim notification of criminals being released from jail/prison).
• One more for the green (utility companies forced to generate power from renewable energy).
• One for district remapping (would give power to a volunteer citizen board, stripping mapping their districts away from politicians).

The ballots go to the printer next week and after that, things are pretty much final in terms of knowing what will be on the ballot. There has been talk of more propositions (up to 18) that we could be voting on and this list doesn't count local measures such as the sales tax for public transportation increase we could be voting on. Quite the political season this will be--get ready for lots of ads.
