I also heard a really, really loud 'boom' last night in Santa Monica. I live between Pico and Ocean Park, a few blocks from the beach. Some friends who live in the same area also heard it. First thing that came to mind was a gas explosion, due to the 5.4 earthquake the day before. But there were no police or fire sirens after, so that theory is out the window. Could it have been a sonic boom? I know that when the space shuttle lands at Edwards Air Force Base, a sonic boom can be heard throughout Los Angeles. I haven't found any info on super sonic flights over the west coast for July 30th.

In the past ...3? weeks I've been startled awake twice at some time between 3-5am by a big - BIG - sonic boom. ...and I'm pretty heavy sleeper.

I don't watch local tv or listen to commercial radio so I figured I'd maybe missed whatever might have been reported about it but, now that I see this, I realize that perhaps nothing's been reported. I live just inside of El Sereno and just outside of South Pas and Alhambra (Huntington and Pueblo). Now, I know gunshots when I hear them and this is nothing like that... anyway, if there's anything else to find on this I'd certainly be down for hearing about it.

I didn't see anything, but Montana Ave. smells like burning.

Brainy: They test electronic and communications equipment for ships there. There's also a (non-military) port where they unload bananas and Hondas, but they don't launch missles or aircraft.

I heard something like that last night, a loud boom, my neighbor did too. Maybe around 9:30 p.m. I looked outside but the sky seemed unperturbed.

Brainy: Vandenberg AFB. Pretty conspicuous. Nuclear missles and space launch facilities and everything!
;-)

However, the missle mostly go out over the ocean...personally, I'd guess it was something experimental out of Edwards AFB or the other not-so-secret bases out in the desert

I figured military testing but "missiles that take off out of SB"? BernieSpear, you sound so nonchalant - like everyone knows about this. What missiles? Whose missiles? Do you mean out of Port Hueneme in Oxnard?

It is more than likely the missles that take off out of Santa Barbara. I've seen them early in the morning if I up around Malibu. Scares you because they move so fast but I believe that is what these fireball people are seein'.
