There’s a number of good films being screened around town tonight.
FILM: See the musical that made Wicked possible: the 1939 musical The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy, Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow are off to see the Wizard in Emerald City on the big screen at the ArcLight Sherman Oaks tonight at 7:30. Tickets: $9-$11.50.
FESTIVAL*: Billing itself as the "last independent film festival," the Dances with Films fest started on last week and continues until Thursday. “Holding all the screenings at the Sunset 5, this year's slate of films consists of, well, a bunch of filmmakers we've never heard of. How's about that for truth in advertising?” Tonight’s lineup includes a screening of short films at 5 pm, followed by Eastern College at 7:15, where four recently graduated college roommates spend their last summer in a small town, experiencing their changing relationships and the possibility that their alma mater might be shut down due to new administration. Ending the evening is Junction at 9:30. Michaela, a lost and lonely young woman, gets a mysterious message from the father she never knew, sending her on a journey to discover twisted family secrets.
FILM: The Academy continues its “Great to be Nominated” series tonight with the 2004 Best Picture nominee The Aviator. We think Leo did a fine job in this film and Cate Blanchett was amazing channeling Hepburn. The movie The film will screen at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater, but if you can get there early enough, there’s a ½-hour of shorts, trailers, outtakes and maybe some other surprises. $5.
WESTSIDE FILM: Stephen Farber’s summer movie discussion series “Reel Talk” continues at the Landmark Theatre tonight @ 7 pm with Swing Vote. Director Joshua Michael Stern will be Farber’s guest and will discuss after the screening what it was like to direct Kevin Costner as a down on his luck loser who can decide the next president of the U.S. with his vote. Hmm. Costner? Down on his luck in film? We’ve never seen that before, huh?
KARAOKE: So you feel like singing up a storm tonight? Then head over to the Brass Monkey in K-town, where they boast more than 15,000 songs in six different languages. The singing commences at 9 pm.
