They did it. Geroge Wolfe and the gang kayaked, from end to end, the LA River, proving that claims by the Army Corps of Engineers that the river was not navigable, thus not a river, were wrong. Looking at all of these photos says something to us. It says "we need this river for the people!"
The journey began on Friday afternoon (photos), continued through Saturday (photos) and finished yesterday (photos below). LAist Photographer Tom Andrews stuck with the group all weekend long and here are photos from yesterday...

Well, it is definitely navigable by car. We could have cleared THAT up a long time ago.
I took a sample for a class project after our last showers around the sepulveda dam area. There were a lot of really bad pathogens in there. Any reports of dysentery from george wolfe and the gang?
Great stuff.
"Any reports of dysentery from george wolfe and the gang?"
Everyone seems to be fine, I haven't turned green yet ;)
I was in the water for 3 days taking pics.
nice job,
Has the Army Corp of Engineers seen the photos yet?
Kayaking the LA River - This is just the kind of bonehead move I would have jumped on when I was young - a meaningless and futile gesture (to mis-paraphrase 'Otter' in Animal House).
This looks like a fun group to hang with. Wish I lived in El Lay. (No I don't.) Well, I live in Phoenix. Most days in the summer, it's like being in the worst parts of the LA Basin.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not an LA basher. I remember being 14 years old in my own room in the Ambassador Hotel in 1962 (or was it 1961?), dancing on the black and white ceramic bathroom tiles while the radio blared Beach Boys music. I was a kid from the NYC suburbs and God I thought LA was heaven.
The LA River, on the other hand...well... AS the little kid on the swayback horse said to JJ Gittes: "This is where the water comes."
Thanks dogheadshop, in response to your question "Has the Army Corp of Engineers seen the photos yet?"
I'm not sure if they have seen the photos.
Jack in Phoenix, it was definately a fun group to spend 3 days on the Los Angeles River with.
"I remember being 14 years old in my own room in the Ambassador Hotel in 1962" that sounds like an incredible Los Angeles memory.
The Ambassador hotel was torn down in 2006.
Again, check with the Corps on this, because I believe they don't dispute that a canoe can go from beginning to end of the river -- only that 48 out of 52 miles are NOT "traditional navigable waters" (TNWs). And another thing: You can't tell me that it's actually possible to flip a boat on the LA River, and that those are rapids on our river, as the photos suggest. This is like those shots of astronauts on the "moon," right? Or you pulled them off of Google Images? Where the hell are there rapids like this on the LA River?! I've only seen that narrow channel thingy. LAist, come on, tell the whole truth!!!
Rhodie, I shot these photos, they are not from Google.
Rhodie, if you have only seen the "narrow channel thingy" whatever that means, then you obviously haven't seen the entire river.
cool project. i have been facinated with the LA river since living in los feliz.
i liked the pictures and following the journey.
BTW, assuming the army corps of engineers is correct and it is indeed not a "river" then what is it?
