Griffith Park & Zoo Recovering From Yesterday's Fire

Yesterday's 25-acre brush fire in Griffith Park forced the evacuation of nearby zoo patrons as well as animals from a breeding facility, like the endangered Condors.

There was a quicker-than-usual response to the fire, which was first report at about a quarter to one in the afternoon, because firefighters from Hollywood were "already deployed nearby to conduct a brush fire drill," according to the Daily News. The fire began near the Toyon Heilpsot, which is a water-loading station for helicopters in the park that was built on a former landfill.

It took 200 firefighters just under three hours to tackle the blaze, but in the end there were no injuries or structures damaged, despite the close proximity to the Travel Town area of Griffith Park. The LA Zoo is expected to open today at 10 a.m. and will resume normal operations. At this time it is unclear as to what caused the fire.
