Mayor Villaraigosa was scheduled to speak at tonight's Human Rights Campaign Annual Gala in San Francisco, but canceled this morning after the group was accused of excluding the transgender community. HRC, which is a national gay rights group, is reportedly supporting a federal civil rights bill that protects gays, lesbians and bisexuals from workplace discrimination, but not transsexual and transgender people.
The Mayor, who fully supports the HRC's mission, explained his feelings in a statement: "As Mayor of the largest city in California, I am committed to creating a world in which no member or group in society is denied full and equal rights. It is my hope that this time next year will find us all united by victory in the fight against Proposition 8 and ever more determined to establish equal rights, with no exceptions, for every one of us."

Agreed, Anjali. That bill is shameful for not adding the trans community, because otherwise it leaves them vulnerable to discrimination in the work place. I'm glad the Mayor stepped down, too. I just don't understand why equal rights for EVERYONE evades our lawmakers.
