Reviews of Jay Babcock's review of Los Angeles didn't go so well in the comments section yesterday. Babcock, the man behind Arthur Magazine, left Los Angeles for Brooklyn earlier this month. Soundboard on LA Times caught up with him and quizzed him about his move and Babcock went off on Los Angeles.
Today, Babcock explains his side of the story on the blog at Arthur Magazine's website: "I recently talked to an LATimes dude about leaving L.A. for Brooklyn. I brought up that there were a lot of great folks in L.A. who I tip my hat to — the people who are doing great things for each other and for the city in the midst of a devolving economic/cultural/ecological/spiritual landscape — but he left it out of the story and chopped up the other stuff so I sound like even more of a bitter [edit] than usual. Ah well. To try and set the record straight — or straighter — lemme just say I’m really gonna miss a lot that’s going on in L.A."
After the jump, some of what he'll miss:
Beyond Baroque
The 2 Freeway
LA Conservancy
Bike Oven/Bicycle Kitchen
Cinefamily
L.A. Free Clinic
McCabe's Guitar Shop
Self-Help Graphics
Elf Cafe
Tommmy's
Friends of the LA River
L.A. Record
South LA Farmers
Spaceland Productions
Silverlake Music Conservancy
CalArts/REDCAT/UCLA Live
Griffith Park, especially Amir's Garden
and a whole lot more listed on his post...

Oh, wha...Jay went some where?
Just kidding. I heard. And still don't care.
Jay Backpedal.
Whatever, he still comes across as a douche.
Dude sure does love the word "devolve" (and "devolving"). He pairs it with "Los Angeles" just about every chance he gets. Maybe living in NYC will help expand his vocabulary.
At the end of the day, I wonder why I care at all about the reasons for one guy's moving on from a city I enjoy.
this guy has already dug his own grave and needs to shut up already!
The 2 Freeway??? Don't forget the 90 you nerdster wannabee!
Man this guy's a trainwreck.
What I don't understand is that he lists a zillion, cool, cultural things about LA and then says: "the creative talent is so huge in L.A., and yet it’s so *squandered* by the culture."
That doesn't even make any sense. The culture of LA is what makes all these great cultural things possible.
Let's see how his first winter in New York goes.
