FILM: AFI at the ArcLight brings everyone’s favorite Reese’s Pieces-eating alien back to the big screen tonight. Find out if Steven Spielberg’s E.T. The Extraterrestrial still holds up after 25 years -- and how cute Drew Barrymore as a kid actor.
Winning Oscar is still better than being nominated
BURLESQUE* Black Bird Burlesque brings an evening of illustion, comedy, burlesque and live music to Safari Sam’s tonight at 8 pm. The show’s free for the month of July (but you need reservations). While dinner is optional, a dinner jacket and evening wear are required. Dancing follows the show.

THEATRE The play Conviction is based on a true story of a doomed love affair doomed by religious persecution in Inquisition Spain. “In present day Madrid, an Israeli scholar is detained and questioned by a Spanish official for stealing a confidential Inquisition file. Together, interrogator and interrogated, are drawn by the files, wrinkled yellow pages into the torrid love affair of the converted Spanish priest Andres Gonzalez, and his Jewish wife, Isabel.” There will be a post-performance discussion after the 8 pm show at the Calabasas Civic Center Amphitheatre. This production is part of the Rubicon International Theatre Festival.

MORE FILM: The Academy’s Great to be Nominated series – films that haven’t won best picture – continues tonight with Peter Weir's Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) at The Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The film’s “a combination of two of Patrick O'Brian's seafaring novels set during the Napoleonic Wars.” A film discussion with production designer William Sandell, supervising sound editor and sound designer Richard King, second unit director David R. Ellis and hair stylist Barbara Lorenz. The screening will cost you $5.
