Mayor Villaraigosa Visits the Derby Dolls

Submitted and authored by Michael Zampelli

The Los Angeles Derby Dolls hosted their own contribution to the Mayor's Day of Service with a banked-track skating demonstration for inner-city kids, seminars on self-improvement, a neighborhood clean-up, Thi Chi classes, Yoga, Self Defense instruction and even a hazardous materials disposal unit and oil recycling center. Mayor Villaraigosa and Los Angeles Laker Jordan Farmar along with other local celebrities arrived in the morning to address the crowd and watch the kids skate. I think the Derby Dolls may have laid the groundwork for another generation of skaters because they had to drag some of these kids off the track.

You know, surprisingly, I don't find this whole burgeoning roller derby thing annoying.

I want a Los Angeles Derby Doll of my very own.

There is another roller skate bunch too. The "L.A. Dolls" I think.

I have to admit I'm surprised that the cheese factor hasn't kicked in with this latest bunch of women wrasslers on wheels.

With names like "Tara Armov", "Demolicious", "Axles of Evil", "Killo Kitty", "Judy Gloom", "Paris Killton" and "Broadzilla" theres some fun seriousness afoot.

But you know, they are a lot cuter than the bunch from (mumble mumble mumble) years ago. Those gals looked like dudes with padded bras.
