I have so many fond memories of this place. I came to Pho So 1 at least once a week while studying at UCLA. The food is cheap, it came out fast, and right next door is Ranch 99 where you can pick up most anything you'd want to cook for the week. Pho So 1 is also probably one of the best Pho places even remotely close to West LA, and I'm very happy to revisit my old feeding grounds for a meal.
Service wasn't bad but wasn't very attentive, either. Pay at the counter when you're ready to go, don't sit and wait for a waiter. The place is bright and fairly clean, and could get packed on any night. Thankfully the Pho comes out fast and people eat fast, so I never had to wait long. They also have seven courses of beef and a ton of other Vietnamese style foods that are screaming to be tried. All in good time, of course, I still can't get over how good the Pho broth is.

Mmmmm I love good pho!
Thanks for the reference on culantro. I always thought one of the side veggies was mint leaves, but maybe i have been mistaking the basil for mint all this time. I always used to ignore the side plate of sprouts and leafy stuff until I tried it. Now it's just not pho with out it.
That single cup coffee brewer for iced coffee is pretty authentic. You don't see that in every Vietnamese or Thai resturant.
Van Nuys is a bit off the beaten track for me. My favorite pho house is Pho 87, 1019 N. Broadway, Chinatown.
For a good filling meal at an inexpensive price, nothing beats pho!
Thanks for the nice article bringing attention to Vietnamese food in Van Nuys! However, my neighbors and I all much prefer Pho 999 to Pho So 1. It is right across the street on Sepulveda, and I would feel remiss in not giving it a plug here.

P.S. A quick Google search yields references on another well-known L.A. blog to previous "Van Nuys Pho wars" so I guess been there, done that.
decent vietnamese food in the westside is non-existant
Good call Kevin. This is one of the few pho places north of westminster that is authentic vietnamese.
i make a trip out to this place every couple of months.
I agree with La Coco, Pho So 1 is good, but Pho 999 across the street is far superior. I've always been pleased with Pho 999, whereas Pho So 1 can be hit or miss sometimes.
Anybody know of the best pho in the San Gabriel Valley? There seem to be quite a few to choose from. For awhile, I was only getting it (pho) down in Long Beach, but then I broke up with the girl I was seeing, so I'm in need of a serious place, closer to home.
No good Pho on the Westside? How about Pho 99 on Wilshire in Brentwood? I think that place is really good. Then again i dont have a TON of other places to compare it to but I really like it.
Anyone know what the number in the name is about?
Obviously this isn't a chain, but they all put a number in the name.
