Pencil This In: Thursday

LEARNING*: Mindshare at the LA Brewery hosts the following speakers tonight: John Smart, futurist and founder of Acceleration Studies Foundation; Chuck Esterbrook, developer and creator of Cobra Language; Tali Krakowsky, director of experience design of Imaginary Forces; and Scott Pagano, creative director of Equilibrium Entertainment; Sissy St. John, wellness yogini, and Sena Koleva, UC Irvine grad student. Their topics include artificial intelligence, immortality and even the chemistry of love. This mind-sharing evening begins at 8 pm tonight and costs $25 (for the learning and debauchery.
FILM The Aero Theatre is holding a Blake Edwards retrospective, and tonight the series continues with the melodrama The Days of Wine and Roses at 7:30 pm. Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick play a superficially happy couple who’s lives are shattered by alcoholism. Immediately following is the suspenseful Experiment in Terror where Lee Remick’s kid sister (Stephanie Powers) is kidnapped by a sociopath, and Glenn Ford steps in to help.
THEATRE: The world premiere of the musical Gulls previews tonight at The Theatre at Boston Court in Pasadena. “Set in 1959 in Greenwich Village and Hollywood, this bi-coastal drama chronicles the hidden and no-so-hidden desires of a family of troubled dreamers yearning for love and immortality.” The play is based in Chekhov’s The Seagull. A five-piece jazz ensemble sets the mood for the musical. $17 for preview tickets.
BIKES ROCK: Bicycle Film Festival 08 film screenings start tomorrow, but the festivities begin tonight with the “Bikes Rock” dance event at A Club Called Rhonda. $3 with RSVP, $6 without and free if you ride your bike to the event before 10 pm. There will be free bike valet from LACBD and DJ sets from Little Boots.
WINE: Taste wine with Caduceus owner/winemaker Maynard James Keenan at K&L's Hollywood store. Caduceus is a Keenan's boutique winery located in the Arizona mountains between Phoenix and Flagstaff. They'll be pouring the following wines: 2005 Caduceus Merkin Vineyards "Chupacabra"; 2005 Caduceus "Nagual de la Naga"; 2005 Caduceus "Primer Paso"; and 2005 Caduceus "Nagual Del Sensei." (The event is sold out, but get on the waiting list.)

July's was off the hook, and August is shaping up to be the best yet showacasing some amazing design and technology - and of course with a little debauchery thrown in for good measure!
