I've totally driven through there, looking for the "crime scene" where Elizabeth Short's body was found. (Call me morbid.) I was like, "Oh, sweet, it's... er, a subdivision neighborhood now!" Makes sense. I bet in 1946 they were already planning a residential community there.

On the drive back (it was a Sunday morning) I saw a ton of people heading back from church, stopping at garage sales/flea markets. Everyone looked friendly and happy. I know that's a generalization, but I thought it would be a cool place to hang out (if not for the reputation of it and the surrounding neighborhoods having gang activity and so forth).

This is awesome work! I moved form LA to Dallas about 8 years ago and man do I miss the culture and realness of Liemert Park.

Thank you

This is so much better than reading about idling patrol cars.

Thank you, Elise!

i just wanted to say thank you for your article. i grew up in the area (i went to school at Transfiguration Catholic Church... yes, there's a school back there) and even now i still get my car repaired at Harper's or swing through to get barbeque. but, in my youth, and even recently i noticed and/or recalled the area being run down, a little seedy, and somewhere you didnt want to be at night. so thank you. thank you for showing me a side of the neighborhood that even as a local i hadnt know about. the art, the culture, the community, the history. thank you for showing a formerly troubled youth that there was and is more than guns and drugs to his old stomping grounds.

and to anyone who reads this comment who hasnt been down there yet, go. just pick a place and eat. the food's that good. phillip's, mama's house, cafe soul, doesnt matter. every time i go i have to loosen my belt and lean to one side.

Nice! I was wondering when the next installment would be. LOVE the photos. Especially the portraits at the end. But especially the B&Ws from the UCLA archive!

You are never, ever doing it again because...

Recycling articles from the Daily Newz/LAT/IVDB/Defamer is so much easier?

That is probably the best neighborhood project article thus far and the all the rest of them are pretty damn good too.

Hooray, Hooray! Elise, this is phenomenal. I am so appreciative of your research, photos, details, interviews, and hard work, because they've combined to create a stellar Neighborhood Project on a neighborhood I knew nothing about and now want to go explore. Thanks! You're inspiring!
