Gates for Metro Red & Purple Lines

The next step in moving on from the honor system to the gated system in LA's subways and some light rails was announced today. $16.1 million in transit security funding was awarded to Metro by the state towards implementation of the gating system. 379 fare gates will be installed within the next 18 to 24 months. "The gates are expected to reduce the need for civilian fare inspectors and sworn law enforcement will also be freed of fare checking responsibilities at gated stations, allowing them to focus primarily on station security," said a Metro statement released via e-mail.

Awesome! Don't use money to increase the frequency of current bus and rail lines. Don't expand service to much-needed areas. INSTALL GATES! YAY!

Will they install turnstiles which are easily jumped or will they go with those elevator door type ones that make jumping difficult? The good news is that our baseball team can now be rightfully called the Dodgers!

It will only be useful if they don't station a security bastard past the gate. At the goldline Sierra Madre station, I would buy a day pass, walk 5 feet, and then get my ticket inspected, even though I was the only one there and he watched me get a ticket. He would never answer what he thought the machine was giving me after it took my money. He always said he didn't see me, even after I started watching him watch me pay for it.
