Video of the Day: How to Bicycle Ride on Mandevile Canyon

Dan Guitierrez and Brian DeSousa of Dual Chase Productions spent the weekend riding Mandeville Canyon and videotaping their experiences, creating a video that demonstrates the relationship between good cycling behavior and good motoring behavior.

Dan and Brian are boardmembers of the California Association of Bicycling Organizations (CABO) and are also League of American Bicyclist (LAB) Certified Instructors (LCI) and have a strong track record of performance as educators using their unique approach to video known as the Cyclists View.

Riding together and wearing helmet cameras, Dan and Brian have created a video that is sure to stimulate a great discussion of appropriate cycling behavior, effective cycling and its impact on managing conflict between cyclists and motorists.

But really now, shouldn't this be titled "Riding Safely Anywhere?"

 

Holy crap, that was SO AWESOME. SO SO AWESOME.

We need to get these guys to head up a full education binge on the LA population, both for cyclists and motorists. That is the best and safest way to ride for all parties involved.

Great Video! Thanks for keeping attention on the Mandeville Canyon situation, and for the great information. More cyclists and motorists need to know about issues like taking the lane so that everyone is safer. I've also posted about California Bike Laws and Road Safety in light of the Mandeville Canyon accident if anyone is interested in more information. Stay safe and ride on!

 

I would love to know how fast the cyclists go downhill. I think that would be beneficial information so that motorists can get an idea of how fast we can travel on two wheels.

What camera was used for the filming (camera make/model, lens model) and what media was it recorded on? Thanks.

 

Enci (and for others who care), I've ridden Mandeville twice now. Both times, I was riding between 25 and 40 miles per hour. (I don't think I ever hit 40, but I did come within a few MPH the second time, once I knew the road better.)

Plus, there's a few stop signs near the bottom that I had to stop for, so the max speed doesn't last for very long. :)

Good video; I learned a lot just from the recommendation that one take the lane when descending.

That said, I hope no one's assuming that the victims in the Mandeville Canyon incident were doing anything wrong or improper. They were victims of a crime, pure and simple.

 

Nice video, Dan and Brian do good work. Watch it again and visualize two bikes riding side by side. IMO most of those interactions with vehicles would work less well with two bikes together.

Personally I feel comfortable riding two abreast on the up-hill of Mandeville but for me that is usually only practical on the lower portion of the hill (I don't have enough lung capacity to ride and talk towards the top). But, on the downhill I feel much more comfortable riding single file. It makes it easier for cars to get around me and in places the road surface is really bad and single file allows me more options for what part of the roadway I can use.
