Jump Without Pier

As dusk was falling over Santa Monica Pier on Friday night, Ronnie Renner was rising. The motorcycle daredevil broke the Guinness World Record for highest air ever attained on a quarterpipe, which had been constructed near the pier's ferris wheel and roller coaster. A pair of towers, each 55 feet tall, were used by the crowd to estimate the height of each attempt. A team of surveyors used reflectors and lasers to confirm the official measurements.

Falling just shy on his first two tries, Renner set the world record at 54' 7" on his third attempt. He seemed to be finished after another pair of exhibition jumps, taking of his helmet and starting to do interviews. When it was announced that he didn't crack 55 feet, the crowd of over 20,000 began to chant, "One more jump!" Renner obliged, and smashed the record he had set just moments before by soaring 59' 2" into the Santa Monica sky.
