Welcome to iPhone Madness

There was an iPocalypse this morning when owners of the now older version of the iPhone went to upgrade the phone's software via iTunes. Users found that the process ended up resetting their phones and because iTunes servers became overloaded as thousands of people across the nation bought the new iPhone 3G, they could not activate the phone, therefore rendering the phone useless for hours.

"It's kinda like running downstairs looking for presents and finding Santa and the presents stuck in the chimney," wrote Robert Gross-Herndon in an e-mail to LAist about his experience this morning.

"This, of course, is what all of you get for being iTools," humorously quipped LAist contritubor, Peggy Archer in an LAist Google Group conversation.

Similarly, people at Apple stores across the nation found the iTunes server crash to hinder their day as it took hours in line to get their phones activated. Some ended up buying their phone, but went home to get it activated later. At The Grove shopping center (pictured above), the Apple Store line was two city blocks long at 1:30 p.m. Grove employees handed out umbrellas to people standing in the sun.

how do you join the google group? I did a search for "laist" and found no groups.

Long live the Treo!

I almost got the Instinct which appears better than an Iphone (w/the exception of not having itunes) but I faced the same problem with the Instinct at the IPhone - it's not a SmartPhone. It's just a phone w/a few nifty features.

If you had a regular phone and go to Iphone / Instinct - amazing upgrade.

If you have a palm/blackberry and go to iphone/instinct - and have been actually using any of the 100000 useful apps on the palm - it's a huge downgrade to go to an Iphone becuase it's not a smartphone. I can go on and detail all the awesome things you can do on a treo and not on an iphone, but its time to go home.

The only thing I envy about these people is that while our economy is going to hell in a handbasket, they still manage to have jobs that they can ditch to go buy a stupid phone. LOL

Gotta love it.

I'm digging that the Grove handed out those umbrellas. The woman at the end of the line when we walked past? Pushing a baby carriage...

wot?! people in LA work?

got iPhone? yep! ha ha to the cattle... moooooooo

in Pasadena we got free iced coffee, free iced tea, free soda and free snacks.... and $200 & $300 iphones, after 7+ hours.

Only about four hours to get my iPhone this morning at the Sherman Oaks store. Of course, finally getting it to activate took another two hours after I got home.

But now, its all good.

I happened to be in Simi Valley yesterday, and manage to get the last phone in town 3.25 hours after I got in line. I love it, love it, love.
Way more useful than my old Wackberry.

i did not waste 3+ hours or 300 dollars. i feel great.
