Police Shooting at Fairfax/San Vicente Shuts Streets Down

crimeAround 6:00 a.m., two suspects who earlier robbed a restaurant in Beverly Hills were pulled over at South Fairfaix, San Vicente and Olympic boulevards, prompting an officer involved shooting.

Officers from a special undercover unit had witnessed the Beverly Hills robbery and followed the suspects in a truck to where they pulled them over, according to the LA Times, who say these officers were from a controversial unit called the Special Investigation Section.

A few years ago, an officer casually told LAist that if SIS went after a criminal, they were out to kill the criminal. That seemed crazy, so that weird fact was ignored. But today, the LA Times confirms some of the officer's statment and said said the unit is controversial:

Since the unit's formation 44 years ago, SIS detectives have confronted hundreds of armed suspects, engaged in more than 50 gun battles, killed at least 37 suspects and wounded dozens of others. Litigation payments in lawsuits brought against the city for incidents involving the unit have resulted in multi-million-dollar payouts.

The two suspects were arrested this morning. One was shot and wounded.

So that's what caused all the traffic in the exact path of my commute today. A super-secret, controversial branch of the LAPD. Great.

I'm all for these cops shooting predatory and armed criminals. A few years ago a friend was brutalized in a takeover robbery. Weeks later SIS caught the crew who did it. There was no shooting, but you can't have everything.
