Tonight in Rock: Robert Francis, LA Philharmonic

Thomas Jefferson's Aeroplane
Kudos to this band's make-me-giggle name: Thomas Jefferson's Aeroplane | Photo via MySpace

There are some pieces of classical music that are truly rock n' roll, in a sense. Hector Berlioz composed the grandiose Symphonie Fantastique ("An Episode in the Life of the Artist") in 1830. There are no words, but the morbid and exciting program music has tales of opium and death. Good stuff, even if you don't know the story line, it sounds fantastic. The LA Phil plays it tonight at the Hollywood Bowl.

More amazing "rock" classical music comes tonight in the huge choral piece, Carmina Burana. If you've seen a movie preview, you've heard this music. Sam Kim has the details for the free concert in Marina del Rey over at LAist's Classical Pick of the Week.

And for some rock? The young and extremely talented Robert Francis plays at the Troubadour tonight along with HAIM and Sunny Levine. Also: Check out Ali Miller's This Month in Rock to plan ahead.

Robert Francis is a must see.

Don't forget the Idyllists at the Silverlake Lounge at 10:30 tonight! They are awesome, and my roommate is in the band.

Orff's Carmina Burana was Tuesday at the Bowl, not today.

Saint-Saƫns: Symphony No. 3, "Organ"
and
Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique

are today.
