I'd like to shamelessly draw attention to the update I've added at the top. Honestly, it defies belief. This guy is paid to offer commentary for a living, and in our paper no less, and he's that stupid. Amazing.

Thank you BLAG, that's very kind of you to say. And JRB, that was actually Waltisfrozen with the historical background. he's actually got a great political blog, www.thetalentshow.org, that is well worth your time.

And also, what marc says RE: required community service. It's not deadly.

"I'm just sad no one noticed how I literally referred to Lucianne Goldberg as fossilized poop."

I appreciate you giving Lucianne's historical back ground. I had no idea that she was involved in Linda Tripp's wearing a wire fiasco. It's too bad she didn't get prosecuted right along side Linda.

D'oh! Ross, I was just gonna remark on your deployment of "coprolitic".

I love your articles, filled with outrage at ignorance and injustice. You are the thinking woman's liberal ranter. :)

Good piece Ross.

Considering the fact that The L.A. Times fired Robert Scheer and kept a right wing hack like Jonah Goldberg on speaks volumes about their editorial slant.

And sure enough Jonah Goldberg has the right to spew all the ingorant, right wing hate that he wants. Our Constitution guarantees him that right. But the amount of ink The L.A. Times allows this hate monger, IMO, should be in the Letters to Editor section, not a colunm.

Freedom of Speech. It's pretty awesome.

Agreed, though are you implying that Jonah Goldberg has a first amendment right to be published by the Times? Why is it that every time a liberal complains about a right-winger acting like a jerk, somebody has to pop-up an make a smartass remark like this?? Nobody said that Jonah Goldberg doesn't have a right to be a shithead.

I said if we had to pick a ridiculous label for it indentured servitude would be the closest. I never stated that I considered it to be one and the same.

Jeez.

how can you equate required community service for grade schoolers (i.e. helping their fellow citizens) to indentured servitude?

i was forced to do service in high school and it did me a hell of a lot of good...not just for me but for all the non-profits and other groups who rely on volunteers. Maybe it will teach some kids that there's more to life than, say, sitting around bitching on blogs about having to do service.

BTW Ross, nice job ripping that clown Goldberg a new one. I had columnists in my college paper that could write circles around him and it pissed me off just seeing his name in print.

"And here I thought the 13th Amendment stipulated that "he who killed Jason must verily portray him in the next film."

HAHAHAHA. gold.

yeah ross, what's going on over at the LA Times? I just heard today they laid off something like 10,000 editorial staffers.

at the newspaper i work at, they did the same thing last year. completely gutted the place. then the bosses realized that holy shit, there's nobody to write anything. editorial meetings would consist of higher-ups barking 'why didn't we have THAT story?' to city editors, who would then ask how a bunch of dust-covered chairs in the newsroom are gonna cover murders.

buzz, I never said I said it was akin to slavery. But we already pay taxes so that children can have an education. If the volunteerism is mandatory it would be much closer to indentured servitude if we have to pick a ridiculous label for it, but definitely not slavery.

Your arguments have no basis and you didn't read my post.

End of argument. Next taker?

hey kristin...

it's not anything akin to "slavery" if you're getting something (an education) in return.

if you don't like it go work 3 jobs to pay your private school tuition.

you wouldn't think you'd have conservatives advocating a something-for-nothing approach to government programs.

then again these are the same folks who believe money is some abstract concept and that you can spend trillions of dollars on nation-destroying/rebuilding all while lower taxes.

the only chance conservatives have is to distort Obama's message and hope the MSM picks up their bullshiz. I have to say I'm dismayed with how well their techniques work.

So I'm skimming through the article and wanna know what I got from it?

1. The LA Times sucks ass.
2. They dared to hire someone that the writer doesn't agree with. (A crazy right winger).
3. Massively long deconstruction of an op-ed piece written by the crazy right winger.
4. Hopefully tongue in cheek statement about LA being a bastion of republicans. (Again just skimming, sick, and already irritated by the first two paragraphs.)
5. Bitch, bitch, bitch, etc.
6. More bitching.

Now then, I just read the original posting in the Times. It seems as though the writer was using the slavery bit to grab attention. He ends up abandoning that claim 1/3 of the way into the article.

And you know what? I agree with him. Compulsory volunteerism is bullshit. I would explain my reasons further, but I'm about to be sick again, and don't particularly feel well enough to continue. Maybe later ;)

Besides, is it so bad to have another point of view? Just because he disagrees with you it doesn't mean he shouldn't be allowed to talk.

Freedom of Speech. It's pretty awesome.

The best part of Liberal Fascism is when Goldberg uses this impenetrable bit of logic :

"Consider two spheres of concern that dominate vast swaths of our culture today: food and health. The Nazis took food very, very seriously. Hitler claimed to be a dedicated vegetarian. Indeed, he could talk for hours about the advantages of a meatless diet and the imperative to eat whole grains. Himmler, Rudolf Hess, Martin Bormann, and—maybe—Goebbels were vegetarians or health food fetishists of one kind or another. Nor was this mere sucking up to the boss (a real problem, one might imagine, in Nazi Germany). According to Robert Proctor, Hess would bring his own vegetarian concoctions to meetings at the Chancellery and heat them up like the office vegan with some macrobiotic couscous."

Essentially, Nazis were vegetarians, liberals are vegetarians, therefore, liberals are like Nazis. Of course when pressed on this point, he backs down with faux incredulity as if the interviewer was misinterpreting what he was saying. Jonah wasn't comparing liberals to Nazis in a bad way. How dare you even assume that! Of course, this just goes to show that he's not only a fool and an asshole, but he's a coward too.

You also missed that Jonah's mommy, who hooked him into the conservative pundit affirmative action pipeline, was the person who convinced Monica Lewinsky's "friend" Linda Tripp to wear a wire for Ken Starr. I dunno what's worse, being a catalyst for a constitutional crisis precipitated on a lie about a blowjob or giving birth to one of the biggest fucktards in the punditocracy.

Finally, Goldberg lives in Washington D.C., not Los Angeles. So why the hell is he in our paper again?
