i grew up right above the wreck. there is also an old rusted tractor sitting on the rocks next to it. its pretty surreal.

When I was a kid the big rumor down at Rat Beach was that the Dominator was a battleship. I think every kid on the Peninsula believed that there had been some epic naval battle right there on the rocks, probably during WWII.

Excellent article. Thanks for posting this.

The largest piece of wreckage washed up on the beach is easily visible in this Bird's-Eye View from Live Maps, while the view of the same area, looking south, appears to be taken at lower tide and makes it easier to see the still-submerged pieces awash in the surf.

I really have to thank lakata.org. They did an amazing amount of research and made this post much easier.

Also cawreckdivers have indepth information on a number of wrecks all over the California coastline. If you are a diver, you can join their organization online.

Elise, you knocked this one out of the park. Awesome post!

My first encounter with the Dominator wreckage was during a 4th grade science class field trip to Lunada Bay to check out the abundant tide pool life. I didn't return to Lunada Bay and the wreckage until practically 20 years later.

Never before have I seen such a thoroughly researched and well-presented narrative on the doomed ship and its landmark ( if ever-shrinking) wreckage.
