DVD Tuesday: A Blueberry and a Drillbit

Jude Law and Norah JonesThere is no life more punishing than that of the young, successful actor. | Photo courtesy of Studio Canal

While many fans of Wong Kar-wai were disappointed by My Blueberry Nights, there's no resisting its lush art direction and cinematography. Norah Jones, however, may have been too inspired a choice. To any who think the Apatow stamp is a guarantee of funny, please watch Drillbit Taylor (if you can make it through the whole, dreary mess). If there is any weakness to Mad Men it's that it may be a bit too meticulous in its rendering of the period. A little more messiness would be welcome. And more January Jones! Tyler Perry continues to print money with Meet the Browns. If only his artistic instincts were as sharp as his pecuniary ones.

John Waters
Who doesn't love John Waters? Seriously? | Photo courtesy of EIFF via Flickr

Who knew that John Waters was such a gifted stand-up? In Till Death Do Us Part, he makes a strong case that he's a better comic than a director. With Hellboy 2: The Golden Army just around the corner, it's ancillary product time! Yay! More junk! The latest edition of Heathers is really only for those who don't already own a copy. There's relatively little new content on this anniversary edition. Considering the world is scheduled to end in 2012, now might be a good time to crack the Maya code. Aria is proof that even great directors can make pretentious films that are little more than excuses to show bunches of naked women. It fucking rules.
