on top of Chinatown, you should visit many of the places inside los angeles/its environs to boost our economy, save fuel/reduce carbon emissions, and since most people are opting for staycations, go to a nice concert, dinner, etc that you normally wouldn't. instead of that trek to europe when you forget how weak the dollar is to the euro...

you really do get a sense of appreciation for the things that are available here, it's amazing.

Hey pickleburp: The event was Saturday night so that's why on Thursday if you were in the area you didn't see it!

I will say, I think it was poorly promoted, because we certainly didn't get any notice about the event. In fact, the only reason I went was because as I was assembling the daily weekend events listings ("Get Out" which now runs Sat & Sun at 9:30 a.m.) I ran across it in a search for events to include.

As Elise said so well above, we just can't possibly pre-list/pre-write all the amazing things that are going on in this wonderful city. We don't write up events after they happen to rub them in anyone's face or to make them feel they missed out, but rather to document an experience we were fortunate enough to have. LAist isn't designed to be an events listings search engine type site; in addition to the few excellent ones Elise mentioned, I will also add Metromix, Upcoming, Yelp, LA.com, and Flavorpill to that list. Listing is their forte, and coverage and stories and photos are ours. Readers are encouraged to find a balance that works for themselves--unfortunately we just don't get all the info sent our way all the time, either, so we have to dig outside our own resources, too!

I encourage folks to take themselves down to Chinatown, day or night, and go on a self-guided tour, visit the museum, or just plain wander around. It's a great place with a great vibe all year long.

This was a great event and the energy and life in the plaza's was a beautiful thing. Downtown has come a long way.

I know it's sometimes frustrating to read reviews after the fact.

We do our best with regular features "Pencil This In" "Tonight in Rock" "This Week in Literate LA" "Get Out" and pre-writes, but we can only do so much or we wouldn't have time to attend any events and write them up.

Not to mention the fact that we sometimes don't know where we are or where we're going until the last minute.

I highly recommend checking out LA Weekly's calendar online, experiencela.com, Myopenbar.com and signing up for email alerts with Cinefamily and the Getty.

What's more astounding is not that you were there ad didn't see it. it's that LAist, a site about LA, only bothers to mention it after the fact. This has been a big problem with the site for a while: they'll do great coverage of events, but they won't bother to give you a heads-up that the event is coming up, so you can see everything you missed out on.

How I end up in Chinatown on some random Thursday afternoon, with nothing to do, and miss this is beyond me.
