From Super-sized to Shut-Out: Fast Food in South LA

McDonaldsInLosAngeles.jpgCouncilwoman Jan Perry made do with a one-year moratorium on the addition of new fast food restaurants in South Los Angeles that went into effect last year, but now she's gearing up to fight the battle of the bulge in a more permanent way by asking for a complete ban on new fast food joints in the area.

According to the Los Angeles Business Journal, "The ban is intended to stop the proliferation of eateries that serve unhealthful food and save the remaining vacant land in the area for other development. It would be the largest such ban in the nation, according to experts familiar with such issues."

Ideally, this large-scale ban would apply to a 32-square mile swath of land that covers the segment of Perry's district that falls "south of the Santa Monica (10) Freeway and all of neighboring City Councilman Bernard Parks' district. It also includes a tiny section of City Councilman Ed Reyes' district" which, combined, holds 700,000 Angelenos, who are currently lucky enough to enjoy eating at an estimated 40% of the city's fast food establishments already located in the area. While fans of the region's multiple McDonald's, Taco Bell, and KFC locations (among so many more delicious and nutritious spots) can still enjoy what's already there, Perry hopes to improve the health of residents by not allowing even more unhealthy places to open up shop. It is uncertain what the feedback--or fight--will be like from fast food corps who swear they have the public's best interest at heart.

how 'bout ms. perry introduce some legislation to permanently ban maximum density or rick caruso from building anymore unnecessary ginormous malls around los angeles. we don't have universal health care so maybe she should just let people decide what, where, and when we want to eat. if she starts paying my 362.00 insurance bill every two months then she can limit my access to delicious fast food.

"maybe she should just let people decide what, where, and when we want to eat."

Strictly speaking, she isn't preventing you from eating yummy fast food; she is preventing you from opening up a new Burger King in South LA. Which, if you have noticed, already has quite of a few. Just saying.

Banning things does not work.

some business savvy person will just open fast food restaurants right outside of the boundaries

Brave New World is a classic novel that was first published in 1932. The author, Aldous Huxley, expressed the possibilities that can take place if the government took complete control of our daily lives. During the continuation of programs to end the war, conflicts and suffering, he based his novel on his own surroundings and his vision of what his hometown of London may look in the year 2540. In other words, it describes living life without the ability to utilize their voice or live the way people today want to live. Many people opposed the possible occurrence and criticized his vision. In the present time, here in America, many of the same seeds have been planted and have now flourished into something threatening to our people and economy. The socialist and the communist movements have been around for many generations in our country, though it hasn’t taken much prevalence until this one, thanks to the politicians who are trying to obtain full control of everything around us. In parts of Los Angeles, for example, inequitable elected officials have passed tremendous restrictions on where fast food restaurants can set up new shops. That’s right; you can’t have a hamburger in certain places in South Los Angeles and you’re going to like it- says the “man”. This is only one of the legs that come from a large menacing operation. In other parts of this operation, state and national politicians are trying to take away your access to fast and easy payday loans. To recapitulate, this is one of their tools to round up enough votes for office so they can further their own interest. We certainly need to fight the government’s ever-tightening restraint that would prevent us from living our lives to the fullest.

payday loan advocate, I'm reporting you. Both your posts have self serving advertisements that have nothing to do with the thread subject.

Back to the subject. If Ms Perry is so concerned about her constituents eating healthy food she shouldn't have aided in the bull-dozing of the South Central Community Farm.
