Good article, Lindsay. It may sound odd but I follow news about bees and have for some time. They fascinate me, and their role is alot more than making honey (or being pesky.) You can't have almonds without bees, and that's just one example.

Douglas--that's why I said "For Angelenos" bees are those things, because most of us don't really know enough about the varieties, etc. to make that distinction. The crisis is, as mentioned, specific to the honey bees involved in crop pollination. But now I know when I start to panic at the recycling center I need to yell "I HATE WASPS!" instead of "I HATE BEES!"

To nitpick, the "bees" at the recycling center are typically wasps, not bees. They are more aggressive and bite as well as sting. Not sure of their part, if any in pollination, although some wasps do, as well as moths and other insects.
