The Metro is Ready to Roll!

Yesterday was a big day for the Metro Board of Directors with an overflow crowd turning up to address an agenda offering up both a tax increase and the Long Range Transportation Plan for discussion. Both Steve Hymon and Damien Newton have great blog entries on the inner workings of the Board including Steve's live blogging from Board Chambers detailing the Mayor's absence, tardiness and eventual arrival.
Apparently this was such a big day for the Metro that a decision was made to keep a maintenance vehicle standing by with the engine running, just in case something needed to be jump-started or pushed around or man-handled.
Speaking of jump-started and pushed around, there was some grumbling from the hoi polloi that the Board Meeting was so efficiently run (even Councilmember Ed Reyes lost the mic at 60 seconds - mid comment!) that many members of the public did not get a chance to address the board. Others complained that the revised comment rules allowed some groups to multiple represent while others were shut out.
All in all, it was a great day, if only because the Metro was able to demonstrate that its commitment to preparedness includes ignoring air quality and fuel prices in order to have maintenance vehicles standing by, warmed up and ready to roll!

Idling vehicles are my pet peeve! I call in the Metro drivers all the time. I call in the Dash drivers all the time. I ask people in parking lots to turn off their engine. Why are people so ignorant about this?
If people would turn off their engines, we would have less health problems.
If people would turn off their engines, we would have cleaner air.
If people would turn off their engines, they would have more money in their pockets.
Wake up people! You are not pleasing me when you turn off the engine. You would be helping our future generation and you would be helping your finances as well.
It's easy math, it's common sense! STOP IDLING YOUR CARS, VANS, BUSSES, AND TRUCKS!

If you idle for more than thirty seconds, you are better off turning off the car and restarting it. Plus, the more gas burned, the more carbon dioxide enters the atmosphere.

Idling cars, trucks waste millions in resources
and more
Idling tailpipes spew out the same pollutants that form unhealthy smog and soot as those from moving cars. Nitrogen oxide, particulate matter, carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds are the main health-harming pollutants in vehicle emissions. Diesel engines emit more than 40 hazardous air pollutants.
and lastly
Tailpipe emissions generated from idling cars contain toxic pollutants that adversely affect the environment and human health.
