Stan Winston, 1946-2008

Stan Winston, legendary Hollywood special-effects wizard, died this weekend at his home at age 62. He succumbed to multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, after a 7-year struggle with the disease. Winston created some of the most memorable creatures in modern cinema, including the Terminators, the "Jurassic Park" dinosaurs, and more recently, the character suit for "Iron Man."

Winston accumulated four Academy Awards and ten nominations over the course of his career; his first nomination, for Best Makeup, came in 1984 for his work on the robot lovestory "Heartbeeps." Awards came in 1987 for "Aliens," in 1992 for "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," and in 1994 for "Jurassic Park." He was a founding member of the visual effects student Digital Design, and even directed the 1989 cult horror film "Pumpkinhead."

Winston is survived by his wife, two children, and four grandchildren. The Hollywood Historic Trust placed a wreath of flowers on his star on Hollywood Boulevard yesterday.
