Save Torrance Skate Park!
The city of Torrance spent a big chunk of change to build the South Bay's largest skate park on Torrance city property. But according to local skaters, the city has not properly maintained it. They do manage to maintain the batting cages and hockey rink that share the property, though. Local skater and mom, Karen Rennie, reports, "Torrance had one of the only wood bowls around- and it is currently closed due to giant holes that could be easily fixed with less than $50.00 worth of wood- yet the holes are still there...a vast majority of the park is fenced off, for what would be only minor repairs."
Now the city has finally come up with a plan to renovate the park, by closing it down over the summer. This move has skaters up in arms. Locals fear that if the skate park is closed down for a long period of time, it will cause new residents in the adjoining condos to complain about the noise when it does re-open, not to mention depriving neighborhood kids the use of the park during peak season. According to Rennie, "A city official recently said the plan was to close down the skate park during the summer for repairs (like that makes sense) and then re-open in the winter (when it rains) for skating. Why not just spend the MINIMUM to repair the park and let the kids use it during the summer, repair in the winter?"
On Saturday June 28th between 11am and 1pm the city will be holding a meeting to solicit the public's input on the design of a new skatepark. It is imperative that supporters show up to let the city know the importance of maintaining the skatepark without shutting it down.
Free skate session and free food and drinks.

"Just go to the back of the parking lot- next to the giant condo-monstrosity the city recently approved."

Look at that. There's four new gang members for you Torrance. Take the park away and what have they got? Oh, yeah, holes in the bowl now, and next it's holes in their arms.

This is completely ridiculous. As someone who grew up in Torrance, I can say that this was a god-send for the city. Growing up, my two younger brothers skated (and still kinda do). The skate park at Wilson Park finally gave kids in the city some communal place where they could hang out, skate, and NOT be breaking the law.
Closing it down in the summer would be absolutely stupid. Skating (along with surfing and the like) is an innate part of the South Bay culture, and denying kids the space to safely participate in something they love is ludicrous.
Make me proud hometown, and DO NOT close the skate park.
And while you're at it, can you make sure that the fireworks at Wilson Park for July 4th don't suck anymore? It's been going downhill for a while according to many residents of the C.O.T.

I'm not a skater, but I jog and play tennis at Wilson park.
With this housing crisis, I don't think locals should be too worry about those townhome condos. One example is the recently postponed construction of that huge land in Hawthorne by the 405.
Just getting it maintained should be a priority especially scheduling it for the fall.
