LA Angels Name Change Hearing Postponed...of Anaheim

The city of Anaheim's challenge to have the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim remove their northern neighbors local from their name will have to wait until the pennant race heats up even more. The hearing has been postponed until September 11.

No reason was given for the delay except that they had "good cause" to sit on it for the summer. At this rate, the Angels may not find out if they must change their name back to the Anaheim Angels until December 10, according to the Los Angeles Times article.

The Los Angeles Angels debuted as a Major League team in 1961 here in LA, but moved to Anaheim in 1966 when sharing Chavez Ravine with the Dodgers got a little too close for comfort. They changed their name to the California Angels, which they were until The Walt Disney Co. purchased the team in 1997 when they became the Anaheim Angels. New owner Arte Moreno chose to return the team to it's original name in 2005, upsetting the cities of Anaheim, Los Angeles, and the Dodgers' organization and fans.

It's worth noting the Angels connection to Los Angeles goes all the way back to 1903 as a very successful minor league club in the Pacific Coast League. Until 1925 they played at the old Washington Park on 8th and Hill downtown. Purchased by William Wrigley in 1921, he built the 22,000-capacity Wrigley Field at 42nd & Avalon and from 1926 to 1957 they played their home games there. REborn as an MLB fanchise in 1961, the Angels played their inaugural MLB season there in 1961, where 248 homeruns were yielded (a major league single-season record that stood for more than 30 years). the following season to share Dodger Stadium with the Dodgers until 1965.

they need to just take a page from the fox teen heartthrob playbook and re-name the team the "OC Angels"...put that "OC" on the hat and they'll have millions of more poser fans all over the country overnight...but at least merch sales would go through the roof.
