Stick a Fork in Them

Eddie House beat the Lakers? For reals? AP Photo/Mark Avery
Gutless. Pathetic. Pitiful. Sorry. And that’s being generous to the Lakers.
Lamar Odom started out the game with a driving layup, and it looked like with that intensity it would be a foregone conclusion the Lakers would win. Lamar and the rest of the Lakers kept up the intensity in the first quarter pulling out to a 21-point lead, the largest lead at the end of the first quarter in NBA Finals history.
Though the Celtics chipped away at the lead in the second quarter, the Lakers kept things going attacking the rim and using their passing to get open shots when needed. Their defense also frustrated the Celtics to 37 percent shooting. Kevin Garnett settled for outside shots, and with Rajon Rondo still affected by his ankle sprain they were forced to rely more on Eddie House and Sam Cassell as their point guards.
With seven minutes left to go in the third quarter, the Lakers were up by 20 points. Then the choke started.
For some reason the Lakers decided to ditch everything they did well in the first half. Rather than pass the ball to unclog the lanes, they decided to try and create their own shots. The spectacular defense they displayed in the first half were laid to ruins by stupid fouls and blown assignments. And yet again the Boston bench outperformed the Lakers 35-15.
The Lakers looked like they were coasting in the third quarter. With a 20-point lead they figured they could throw up shots at will and the Celtics would just go away.
But the Celtics didn’t go away, and once the Lakers realized that they couldn’t come back with the same intensity they displayed in the first quarter. Every play looked like it was played on the sands of the Sahara. The Lakers were that much slower and that much more lackadaisical in the final 19 minutes.
On paper the Lakers should have won the game. They were healthy. Hell, the Celtics had to rely on Eddie House as a point guard! The
Shoulda, woulda, coulda.
With their backs against the wall, the Lakers now have no margin for error. There’s no time to let a 24-point lead evaporate. There’s no time for Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol to pussyfoot their way around the basket.
Apart from the first quarter of this game, nothing in this series indicates the Lakers have what it takes to beat the Celtics once much less thrice. The Celtics have imposed their will upon the Lakers. They’re the ones who have been the aggressors making the Lakers look namby-pamby trying to skirt around the defenders.
On Laker’s Line on KLAC, many callers thought the Lakers still have a chance to win the series. From the sound of it they have been sipping too much on what Vic the Brick has been drinking.
Let’s face the facts. The Lakers are done. Boston will mercifully end this charade on Sunday. And the Lakers can yet again be described as another “L” word: Losers.

Oh how the fans jump right off the wagon when their not winning.
As a real fan I will still be rooting for them and holding out for a miracle but if they should lose I won't be surprised.

Possibly the most disturbing thing about this is that now -- every time any team takes a huge lead in a game in the finals, we'll be reminded of this game. "Remember what happened to the Lakers..."
What kind of MVP are you, Kobe?!?

i'll be there in Section 310 on Sunday to cheer on Purple and Gold. Been to 10 games this season, 8-2 so far with the only 2 losses being against the Celtics. Last night was some of the most emotional pain i have ever endured at a sporting event, but you don't see me jumping ship. Go Lakers!

It's not done till one team wins four games. Until then... GO LAKERS!

Definitely, if the Lakers come in 2nd, with a 57-25 record, and having knocked out three 50+ win teams, they are gutless, pathetic, pitiful, sorry losers.
Clown.

I gotta say that loss is gonna leave a mark, but fuck it -I've had my car flag for the duration of the playoffs and I still think they're a fantastic team. If we lose, it will at least be to a pretty damn good team in their own right. And anyway, we'll only be getting better in the coming years. The Lakers are a young squad, if nothing else, this'll toughen them up for next year's finals.
Like The Due, the Lakers abide.
Go Lakers.

No matter what I will always love my Lakers.
Anyone else see Sasha in nothing but a town during that half time thing on Phil? Awesome.
GO LAKERS!

Oh Sasha, you're such a diva.

I still love the lakers.... but I can't watch the next game. Absolutely cannot. I know they're going to win it, though.
I hope the celtics catch a disease and die.

hey didn't lakers cut a 20 pt deficit in only 7 minutes? yeah... remember that?

I'm not even a Lakers fan, but I love the city of LA. The title of this post fuels the fire of what everyone else is saying about Lakers fans and people of Los Angeles is general - that they're spineless bandwagon jumpers who flock to whatever is the next biggest fad. Thank you for helping to perpetuate that.

While I do agree that a great number of fans are band wagoners, but I would say the true core Lakers fans are pretty harsh on their team and players. We don't pull punches and will boo our team on the court if they are playing like scrubs. We definitely don't put no flags on our cars too!
Maybe it's my purple and gold-colored glasses. 8-D
GO LAKERS!

yes, they HAD to rely on the point guard who gives them the best chance to generate offense against the lakers. have you been watching this series? cassell has been cover your eyes bad throughout the playoffs. although rondo is a good player and had a great season, his lack of outside shooting let the lakers basically ignore him on the defensive end.

One possession at a time. One quarter at a time. One game at a time. Sucks to be down 3-1. Sucks to blow a big lead and a huge opportunity to tie the series. So what. Fxxk it. Fxxk the haters. Fxxk the doubters. One possession at a time. One quarter at a time. One game at a time. Plenty of time to cry about coulda-woulda-shoulda in July (and again in october if you're a dodgers fan).
