The city of Compton will finally have its very own skatepark, a brand-new facility that will open its doors to skateboarders in September. A number of grants went towards building the 12,000 square foot park, which will be located at Wilson Park, 123 N. Rose Ave. The Tony Hawk Foundation contributed over $10,000 and was a major partner in the design of the park, while a gift of $157,00 from the The Roberti-Z’Berg-Harris Grant in 2002 started the project.

The park's design includes a kidney-shaped bowl, a street course area, and an assortment of banks, ledges, rails and steps. Community newspaper The Wave reports:

Along with spacing, in order to keep people from accidentally slipping into the skatepark’s kidney-shaped bowl, a 42-inch fence will surround the premises, not so much as a barrier, but as a warning to individuals that they are entering a skatepark area.

The once estimated $250,000 skate park in 2007 has now grown in size, both in square feet and amenities. In the original layout, the park was expected to stand at 10,000 sq. ft. The kidney bowl and street course were smaller and ledges, steps and ramps were fewer.
