Farmers have been handout kings for decades - we just passed a $500 billion 3 year farm bill (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121141471637712559.html?mod=googlenews_wsj). These guys need to get a grip.

"It's up to the individual consumer to make the right choices about where their food comes from and who is reaping the benefits of cultivation." What are you suggesting here? Should I stop eating rice so that other's can have it? Should I buy more rice to support our economy? I agree with your statement that the best solution will be a major overhaul of the current system, but I'm not sure how much my individual rice-buying habits will impact that.
