Diesel Books Brings Indie Lit to the Westside

Diesel, A Bookstore to Open in Brentwood Country Mart and Bring Indie Lit to the WestsideDiesel, A Bookstore, one of the lesser known (but not for long) indie bookstores in Malibu has announced plans to bring indie lit to Brentwood by setting up shop in a 1,500 square foot space in Brentwood Country Mart.

When Dutton's closed in late April, many in the bookish community wondered how they could possibly fill the void and get their local lit fix. Now, after a full Dutton's-less month, the announcement of Diesel's arrival on the Westside is an exciting one.

Diesel's co-owner, John Evans, was careful in his remarks to the LA Times about the inevitable comparisons that neighborhood booklovers may make between Dutton's and Diesel:

"Evans, an independent bookseller since 1980, said Diesel would not attempt to replicate Dutton's, a much larger destination store with a national influence. 'Dutton's was more regional,' he said. 'We're very neighborhood-oriented.'"

We've been thrilled with the community-based author events that Diesel Malibu (and their much-loved Oakland location) has hosted and we look forward to an expanded readings calendar once they move into their new space.
