  • As planned, Universal Studios opened to the public today and guests were able to see some of the fire damage firsthand while on the famous tram tour. The air was still smoky around the theme park, and several fire trucks and personnel remained on scene.
  • Police in Costa Mesa are working on the case of a 20-year-old woman who was found naked and unconscious in a hotel hot tub. She was apparently sexually assaulted and was taken to a hospital for treatment after she was found floating--but breathing--in the water.
  • Sold! The Century Plaza Hotel has a new owner today. Next Century Associates bought the ol' gal from Sunstone Hotel Investors Inc. for a cool $366.5 million.

  • Due date: City Librarian Fontayne Holmes has announced she will retire at the end of August. She has led the LAPL since 2004.
  • Actor Kelsey Grammer is recovering after suffering a mild heart attack this weekend at his home in Hawaii. LAist last ran into the 53-year-old former Cheers and Frasier star at the opening of the Simpsons ride, where he treated us to his trademark Sideshow Bob evil laugh.
  • Another SoCal cemetery is making headlines (but not for the same reasons as Hollywood Forever). Over in Twentynine Palms, police are holding suspects accused of vandalism that includes knocking over, smashing, and cracking headstones as well as tossing the mementos and flowers left graveside all over the roads.
  • And RIP to music legend Bo Diddley, who died today at the age of the 79.
