Is Thai Vegan the New Sushi?

While ordering tacos this past weekend, Pat at Eating L.A. noticed that Cardone's Deli on Sunset had been replaced by a new place called The Vegan Spot. "There are seriously a lot of vegan places in Silver Lake and Echo Park already. (Cru, Flore Cafe, Elf, at least four Thai places, etc.) So we're just wondering, are there really that many vegans on the near-Eastside?"

One Food Network chef say Tapas could be the next big thing. Another says fresh foods will be it, but one said it will be Asian fusion. And while that's quite general, Thai Vegan fits into that category and the city has definitely seen an abundance of more and more said eateries. The Eastside is reportedly chock full of them now and one just sprouted up in the NoHo Arts District. Beyond Thai, a Japanese vegan restaurant recently opened downtown and izakaya bars are becoming a common option for many. What do you say? Is Thai Vegan the next big thing or just a neighborhood staple coming to a corner near you?

All of that makes me drool...

Looks so tasty - great photos.

I love vegetarian Thai food, but never have had vegan Thai food. Just add this to the list to "restaurants that the Bay Area should have"!!

Yeah, I'm not certain. There's something about "chicken" that just doesn't do it for me.

A real dead bird roasting on a spit though? Mmmmm... MEAT!!! :D

Everyone thinks the Bay Area is some sacred place for vegetarian/vegan food and nothing could beat it. Don't get me wrong, they have tons of great options, but in Los Angeles, the options are more diverse and more plentiful (to be fair, we are bigger).

i have to throw in a plug for green leaves vegan on hillhurst!

very tasty. :)

The Vegan Spot isn't thai vegan, just vegan. it's a counter service restaurant from the people that run Flore.

Thai vegan is more like fast food to me. it's not necessarily all that healthy, but delicious when you're in the mood! also, their menus are almost all identical. since it's so casual and not so boutiquey, i don't foresee it becoming "the next big thing". they are already around everywhere.

Glad to hear Vegan Spot isn't Thai vegan. I am so over that cuisine.
Vegan Spot is around the corner from me and I can't wait to try it. I am not vegan nor vegetarian but love Flore's fake reuben sandwich... I read on another blog somewhere that this place has great fake roast beef and cheddar. Has anyone here tried the place yet?

thanks for the clarification snard!
