Owner of 6 Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Arrested

Yesterday, Drug Enforcement Agents arrested Virgil Grant, 41, who owns six medical marijuana dispensaries around Los Angeles, after an incident that allegedly involved product from one of his stores, reports the LA Times.

The accident that prompted authorities to begin investigating Grant occurred after CHP Officer Anthony Pedeferri had just pulled over Andreas Parra, a 20-year-old motorist from Phoenix, during a routine traffic stop.

Pedeferri had dismounted his motorcycle and was talking to Parra when [suspect Jeremy] White's pickup drifted out of the northbound lanes of the 101 Freeway near Ventura and careened into Parra's SUV. Parra was killed.

Pedeferri, a triathlete and the father of two girls, was knocked out of his boots and thrown 20 yards into brush along the side of the road, according to news reports. He was left paralyzed by his injuries.

White's blood was tested and a forensics lab supervisor said White had the highest levels of marijuana concentration he'd ever seen.

DEA agents conducted stings at each of Grant's stores, which included purchasing "a pound of marijuana for $5,700 out of the back door of the facility." Grant is charged with drug conspiracy, money laundering and operating a drug-involved premises within 1,000 feet of a school and his wife was also charged with drug conspiracy and 22 counts of money laundering.

In late July, the Los Angeles City Council disapproved of the DEA's actions of raiding medical marijuana storefronts while placing a moratorium on new facilities so rules could be drafted to better regulate them. However, city attorneys say Grant misled the type of operation on his business license, which has also expired.

It should be noted that the driver of the vehicle also had the substance ECSTASY in his system, which stays in your system for a much shorter period of time as does marijuana.

Funny how the DEA doesn't release that information.

PS. - I've even watched cops enough to know that if you pull somebody over on a highway, you either walk up to the passenger side window, or walk the driver away from the cruising traffic.

My question is - how was the connection made between the stoned and/or rolling motorist and the owner of the all the dispensaries? How does the CHP know that the THC that was in White's system came from Grant's dispensary at all? LA is a pretty weed saturated city, after all.

Pill bottles with dispensary labels.

"Pill bottles with dispensary labels."

And all the dispesary labels I've ever seen include a warning NOT to drive a motor vehilce or operate machinery while taking their products. That warning is on everthing, even edibles.

This is just more DEA harrassment.

Agreed, this is personal choice - when Nicole Richie went the wrong way on the freeway, then didn't ask any questions to her doctor or CVS/Rite Aid/Walgreens.

Same with Alcohol and drunk driving accidents - double standards everywhere.

So true Bartlett Pears! This was a total judgment call on the part of the DEA - harassment plain and simple. It makes no difference though. The genie is outta the bottle on the medicinal cannabis. It's been over a decade now since prop 215 passed (the medical marijuana legalization act) and I think most people can see that society hasn't fallen apart in some kind of pot-fueled apocalypse.

This is like hauling in the owner of Jack Daniels distillery because a DUI killed someone, and that happens a lot more often than this does.

I love the sign... "Stop Arresting Patients!" Frankly if the "patients" are driving under the influence they should be arrested.

As for Grant, if what the District Attorney says is true, he should be arrested for misleading for a business license and expired to boot.
