  • The marine wanted in connection to the murder of a fellow Camp Pendleton marine has been arrested in Texas. Pfc. Alvin Reed Lovely had been a fugitive since last week and was found at a relative's home.
  • Juan Alvarez, who is on trial for 11 counts of murder, admitted in court today that he was once a meth addict. Alvarez claimed that while he withdrew from the drug he felt depressed and suicidal; his desire to kill himself led him to park his SUV on Metrolink tracks in 2005, causing the train's derailment and the 11 deaths. He exited the vehicle prior to the crash.

  • It's a blog-eat-blog world out there, kids. And Megan McCardle blogs about one blog around this town she isn't too fond of. Ouch!
  • And in more tales of blogging blarghs, LA-based writer Laura Lane tells the USA Todaywhy she decided to take down her Lakers blog after writing up a run-in with Vanessa Bryant (a certain player's missus).
You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive from readers like you will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
