Date Set Again for Gay Marriage in California

Same-sex, gay or lesbian marriage in California will now begin on June 17

After announcing earlier this week that same-sex marriages could begin on June 14, a memo went out today from California's Office of Vital Records saying that the new start-date is Tuesday, June 17. The date is after a "key deadline," in which the state's supreme court has to make a decision on whether or not to delay the ruling until the November election when voters can decide to amend the state's constitution banning same-sex unions.

The memo also put the final word on how marriage licenses will look: "Party A" and "Party B" are the new "bride" and "groom."

Locally, Los Angeles County Clerk Dean Logan "said he will meet this week with an advisory group of gay and lesbian community leaders to discuss how to issue licenses quickly and safely," reported the LA Times. "Already, West Hollywood officials have asked that the county clerk open a satellite office there." He is also looking into extending hours and bringing in more volunteers. County Board of Supervisors have asked the Sheriff's Department and their Office of Public Safety to beef up security around county buildings for the first few weeks of same-sex marriages.
