In all, eight people died and as many as 28 people injured on Los Angeles roads Memorial Day, as reported by the Los Angeles Fire Department. Two incidents occurred in the Hollywood area and two others in South Los Angeles.

Shortly before 8:00 a.m. in the Hollywood Hills area, a Range Rover tumbled 250 feet down a steep brush covered hillside about into a carport in the 8700 block of Duncamp Place, leaving two dead and three injured, according to the fire department's incident report. Los Angeles Police Captain Nancy Lauer told the LA Times "that the driver was apparently trying to back up or turn around and may have lost control when the vehicle dipped into a large pothole that nearly spans the road."

At 4:19 p.m., two vehicles rolled over at the southbound 101 Freeway and Highland Ave. in Hollywood. Preliminary reports indicated that eight people were injured, but upon arrival, paramedics treated seven people for minor injuries and found one child in critical condition.

At four minutes before 6:00 p.m., the deadliest crash of the day and one of the worst traffic accidents in the city, according to traffic investigators, occurred at the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Florence Avenue in Hyde Park. A van reportedly ran a red light at a high rate of speed hitting another van, lifting it into the air, and setting off a chain reaction fire with four other vehicles. 16 people were injured and five died, two of them children.

At about the same time a 21-year-old male motorcyclist was found dead adjacent to Figueroa St. in the Harbor Gateway area near the eastbound 105 Freeway transition to the southbound 110 Freeway.
