Walter Meego @The El Rey 5/20/08

Walter Meego is not a dude, it's actually Justin Sconza (vocals, keyboards, guitar) and Colin Yarck (keyboards, computer), a Chicago-bred but LA-living electronic-alt-pop duo. Throw Andrew Bernhardt in the mix (or on the mix, hmmm?) and you've got one hell of a kick-ass live band. They hit the El Rey earlier this week as the openers on The Presets' tour, playing to a sold out crowd.

You might not know Walter Meego yet (although you may have caught two songs in the past month on different episodes of Ugly Betty) but you should. Their music is infectious and rousing, and the cut "Forever" off their May 27 release Voyager [reviewed here on LAist] is worthy of becoming your go-to happy place song for the summer. The crowd on Tuesday night was easily seduced by the passionate performance (Bernhardt threw his entire being into the show, it read on his face and in his body language) and the show was electric.

The boys played a (too) short set of tracks from Voyager, but were not easily forgotten. They translate from album to live show seamlessly; they deftly move from instrument to computer to vocals without missing a beat, and just let the catchy, dark, sexy, and vibrant sound take over.
