'They want to force you into public transportation. The problem is, we don't have any'

Driving Laws in California
A new law states that you cannot sleep on the top of your car... just kidding | Photo by Hamed Saber via Flickr

Now there's an attention grabbing quote, spoken by Dick Messer, director of the Petersen Automotive Museum, up there in the headline. With the onslaught of laws and proposed ideas for drivers of cars (there are 33.5 million registered vehicles in California), many think it's getting a bit ridiculous in a report by the LA Times. From smoking with minors present in the car to driving with a pet on your lap (the Paris Hilton law), there's at least one law affecting someone (no more handheld cell phones anyone?)

A few proposed laws mix education and driving privileges. One allows 16 and 17-year-olds to have a license as long as they can prove they are in school and not dropped out. Another would suspend the learning permit or license until the student is 18 if they are truant.

Then, of course, there is past enthusiastic LAist commenter Sen. Jim Battin's law that would allow SUVs, Hummers or any car with an owner who purchased carbon credits to use the carpool lane. The bill was rejected at committee level.

Ha, ha!

no dogs in lap = forcing you into public transit

yeaaaaah...

Actually if people wouldn't do the things they do in their cars while driving there wouldn't have to be these "unnecessary" rules.

If more laws are rules are needed to keep people awake, aware and moving through traffic then I'm all for it.
