Confusion at the New Park & Pay Machines on Sunset
The new Park & Pay meter system is now in effect in Silver Lake -- at least along both sides of the 3500 block -- where we found people gathering in confusion at this meter outside Millie's this morning.
The Australian-made Reino meters are not as imposing or as ugly as traditional meters, and while you can pay with change, cash, or credit card, it is paperless -- there is no receipt needed to post inside your car.
The meters would be highly effective if only they were more intuitive. The photo below was taken after 25 cents was deposited (good for one hour). Instead of indicating one hour of time or some acknowledgment of a completed transaction, the machine appears to be asking for more money.
Look for a crowd of confused Silver Lake-goers gathered around a Park & Pay meter near you and tell 'em to simply enter the number corresponding to your spot (imprinted on the sidewalk), drop a quarter, and you're good. A few bits of info I found out while talking to a guy installing one of these meters yesterday in front of Flore Vegan:
In 30 days the price at these meters is rising to $1/hr.
You will also "soon" to be able to add money to your parking spot from any of the meters in the neighborhood.
The pay by phone option costs 20cents per transaction.
