City Approves $7 Billion Budget, City Calligraphers Saved

city of los angeles budgetAfter a month of study and protest, City Council put some closure on the budget for fiscal year 2008-2009. With a $406 million deficit, the biggest the city has ever seen, tough choices were made, but some of what was threatened was saved -- line items such as library hours, film festivals, the city's television Channel 36, homeless shelter beds and calligraphers to decorate city proclamations, according to the Daily News.

And to save programs like that, money must be found elsewhere by either cutting it or raising it. Trash fees will be raised from $8 to $36 over time, making the service a no longer subsidized one. "Also increasing is the price to park in a city lot or structure, the cost of adopting a pet from a city shelter, the cost of playing a round of golf at a municipal course, and the cost of getting a car released from an LAPD impound lot," said KNBC.

And all while cuts are happening, the goal is to increase the LAPD force by 780 officers. 10,000 or more officers has been one of the mayor's goals since the beginning of his time in office.
