Box Office Review: Prince Caspian mounts Iron Man
To one's surprise, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian zoomed to the top of the weekend box office. Early estimates of an $80M haul, however, proved far too optimistic as Prince Caspian settled for what can only be considered a disappointing $56.5M. Mega-blockbuster Iron Man had another great weekend, pulling in $31.2M and surging past the $200M mark ($222.4M). Despite not being any good, What Happens in Vegas had an above-average second frame ($13.8M/$40.3M). Speed Racer was not so fortunate and is proving to be a calamitous, career-killing bomb for Warner Brothers and the Wachowiski Brothers ($7.6M/$29.8M).
Holdovers held every other spot in the top 10: the surprising hit Baby Mama ($4.5M/$47.2M), the crappy Made of Honor ($4.5M/$33.7M), the funny, dick-crazed Forgetting Sarah Marshall ($2.5M/$55M), the wasted Harold & Kumar ($1.8M/$33.9M), the dumb and fake The Forbidden Kingdom ($1M/$52.9M) and the surging fantasy The Visitor ($0.68M/$3.4M). Nothing in the limited-release crowd managed to make so much as a blip at the box office over the weekend. You know what that means--yes, the summer movie season has truly arrived.
