Eye Nosh: The Red Velvet Cupcake Episode

The pursuit of perfection in a Red Velvet baked good is noble and often unending. Our LAist Featured Photos contributer pink_fish13 gave us this series of shots of one such encounter at the Pit Fire Pizza on Westwood, with the following observations:
pretty good, i think they probably have these brought in doubtful they make them on site. the cupcake itself was a little on the dry side but the icing was just like my mom's cream cheese icing, delish!If cupcakes are your thing, maybe we will see you tomorrow at the Cupcake Challenge (you might get to meet an LAist-er or two who are serving as "celeb" panelists, wink-wink!). A Red Velvet or two just might be on the menu...and so the quest continues. Any local favorites for Red Velvet cakes and cupcakes you'd care to tip us off to?

Red Velvet cake is kind of disgusting, if you think about it. There is close to a full CUP of red food coloring in there to give it that 'lovely' hue.
Honestly, give me a good old piece of chocolate or vanilla cake without that crap and I would be a happy camper.

As Elise can testify to, I am an "independent red velvet tester." Nothing beats Doughboys red velvet cake, health-violation-closings nonwithstanding. I've (almost) tried every one in town.
