Fresh & Easy to Sherman Oaks?

Oh, you've got to love rumors, especially those that both anger and please people, depending on who you're speaking with. This rumor comes via a report during the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council* meeting last Monday night. During a Land Use Committee report, someone asked what the status was on the old Ventura Club building at Colbath and Ventura (just East of Hazeltine). Originally it was slated as a Walgreens, but after that got scrapped, the building sat abandoned. But now there a lot of construction going on inside as well as substantial parking lot additions. One member said he heard it was supposed to be "that English grocery store chain." Right then, the room was abuzz with "Tesco" and "Fresh & Easy," and how the Van Nuys location is not working out. No one could confirm any of this and calls to corporate late yesterday afternoon were not immediately returned, but upon a site visit, whatever's being built at the location is looking to be rather large in size (photos below)

In other Sherman Oaks grocery news, back in February, Curbed LA reported that a Sherman Oaks Homeowner's Association newsletter talked about both Whole Foods stores in the neighborhood (named Sherman Oaks East and Sherman Oaks West) might be combined into one store. One SOHA member told LAist that the latest he heard was that they might buy the Pavilions on Ventura Blvd. and set up shop there. If that happens, then what of the large retail spaces that they currently occupy? Perfect locations for two more Fresh & Easy locations. Oh boy.

I started out really loving Freasy. I would go several times a week since the Hollywood location is only a couple blocks away from where I live. The more I've gone, I've realized that the 'fresh' produce expires extremely fast, it's not really any cheaper than other grocery stores and the options are very very limited.

I'll probably start going back to Ralphs or Trader Joe's, I'd rather spend a little more to have true fresh produce and options.

About a year ago I was complaining to the Deli Manager in Pavilions about the quality of the Ventura Blvd location compared to all the others.I was told at that time that they had plans to expand it and an agreement was in the works for them to take over the parking lot on the east side of the building which is currently an overflow lot for a car dealership. No clue if this is true but a girl can hope!

That would be an interesting development. That Pavilions is strangely icky for being Von's supposed "upscale" cousin (at least, that's what I thought Pavilions was before moving near one). I would still be able to walk to Whole Foods at that location, albeit slightly further, but would Fresh and Easy be a good addition to my neighborhood or not? I can't tell.

A Whole Foods with a decent-sized parking lot would be nice as well, especially if it's not half a block from where I live anymore. As would a Trader Joe's with the same.

I heard the Van Nuys location not working out had something to do with people objecting to "over-saturation of liquor licenses in the Los Angeles community." F&E apparently didn't get a liquor license for the location. Would things be different in Sherman Oaks since it's not as poor an area of LA?

I happen to KNOW what's going in there, but it's not what you're thinking...

"Fresh" is definitely a clue...
