Workout Wednesday: Mat Pilates at Easton Gym Co.

After having spent some time learning pilates on the Reformer and Caddilac, I decided it was time to brave a mat class. I had heard they were grueling and was concerned about keeping up with the other students, but it was time had come to dive in and try.
I arrived and Easton Gym on Beverly. The gym has been there since 1938 and has that old Hollywood vibe. The classroom is upstairs next to their roof deck. Instructor Shana Stark hands out yoga mats and we begin.
After some stretches we move on to the abdominal work. The infamous pilates 100's kick my butt, but I persevere. Then more and more core work. Next up some killer leg exercises. It is amazing how much a leg lift can hurt. We pull out weights for several sets including bicep curls and and a 'shaving' move that makes my triceps quiver. With a cool down at the end, we're done.
I asked instructor Shana Stark about teaching pilates.
I love to train people in Pilates because I enjoy seeing the strength people build in their bodies. I help people achieve better posture, coordination, strength and lean, toned muscles through building core strength. It's the change in their bodies, improving flexibility, building muscle tone and better posture that is most satisfying. I like pushing clients beyond what they ever think their bodies are capable of and seeing the results.I use to be a bankruptcy lawyer. I was sitting at a desk with little to no exercise and I was extremely overweight. After giving birth to two children, I never lost any of the baby weight. I decided to go through a weight loss program (Weight Watchers). I lost 70 lbs, but didn't have muscle tone or strength.
I started pilates and it transformed my body. I am in best shape of my life. Better than when I was in my 20's. I decided to become a Pilates instructor because I went through my own transformation and wanted to do the same for others.

Overall Workout: an 8 (though I’m sure Shana would be happy to make it a 10!)
Hobby-Developing Potential: High, when you see the results.
Next-Day Pain: Moderate
Cost: $15 per class or join the gym and take as many as you want.
