China's Earthquake is a Good Reminder for LA

7.8 earthquake rocks China

The nearly 10,000 person death toll (and rising!) after yesterday's massive 7.8 earthquake in the Sichuan province of China serves as a reminder to Los Angeles that we are just as vulnerable to such a large shaker. It was just last month that scientists said "California faces an almost certain risk of being rocked by a strong earthquake by 2037." And they're talking about "the big one."

Shanghaiist, a sister site to LAist, has an extensive story with nearly 100 real-time updates. It is probably the best round up of all news regarding the quake, especially or ex-pats.

Here in Los Angeles, it is imperative that citizens prepare themselves. At the very least, officials say the two most important parts of being prepared are water and shelter (you can survive 10 days without food). To get even more prepared (which we always recommend), check out this interview with LAFD's Captain Stacy Gerlich of the Disaster Preparedness Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Unit.

i wouldn't say its a "good" anything.

No joke Zach...

Everytime I read/hear about a major earthquake somewhere, I wonder to myself' "when is our turn". It really worries the shit out of me. Be prepared people... be prepared.

I'm not saying the quake is good in that it warns others -- but it would be really terrible if people in earthquake zones did nothing after learning about the China quake. Yes, be prepared! It's not a matter of if, but when.
